Ennai Kathirikai Kuzhambu|Brinjal Gravy|How to make Ennai kathirikai Kuzhambu

Ennai kathirikai kuzhambu is a south Indian special side dish recipe. It can be prepared with simple ingredients and within a few minutes. It will take around 30 minutes to cook. The taste of this gravy will be very tasty and mouthwatering. To make this ennai kathirikai kuzhambu you have to choose the small size of brinjal. Because it will be fried as the whole brinjal.
Ennai kathirikai Kuzhambu and hot boiled rice is the best combination. Ennai kathirikai Kuzhambu has a sour tatse with a complex flavor.
There are many variations and version of making ennai kathirikai Kuzhambu. I am sharing my style of making ennai kathirikai kuzhambu.

Servings - 2
Preparation Time - 15 Minutes
Cooking Time - 30 Minutes


Brinjal (small size) - 10 - 12
Onion -1 cup
Coriander Seeds - 2 Tbsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 tbsp
Pepper - 1/2 Tbsp
Fennel seeds - 1/2 Tbsp
Cinnamon - 1 small stick
Red Chili - 4
Garlic - 6 cloves
Ginger - 1 Piece
Coconut grated - 4 tbsp
Tomato - 3 Medium
Tamarind - 1 amla size
Oil to Fry
Salt to tatse
Fenugreek Seeds - 1/4 Tbsp
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Tbsp
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Coriander Leaves to garnish
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 Tbsp


Step 1: Heat pan and add 2 tbsp of sesame oil.
Step 2: Then add red chili, coriander seeds, pepper and cumin seeds. Saute for 30 sec.
Step 3: Now add 1 cup of small onion and saute well. 
Step 4: Once the onion fried 3/4th add turmeric powder and saute.
Step 5: Now add grated coconut and saute for 1 minute.
Step 6: Then add chopped tomato and salt. Saute until tomato gets smooth.
Step 7: Once the tomato cooked switch off the flame and let it cool completely.
Step 8: Transfer it to the mixer jar and grind to smooth paste and keep aside.
Step 9: Heat oil to fey the brinjal.
Step 10: Crosscut the brinjal for fry.
Step 11: Once the oil gets heat, add brinjal and fry until color changes and cooked well.
Step 12: Take out the brinjal once it fried well.
Step 13: Heat pan and add 4 tbsp of oil.
Step 14: Add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds,5-10 small onion, 1 red chili, and curry leaves one by one.
Step 15: Saute for a minute and add the ground paste. 
Step 16: Add tamarind pulp and Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
Step 17: Now add fried brinjal and cook for 10 minutes in medium flame.
Step 18: Once oil gets separate switch off the flame.
Step 19: Garnish with some coriander leaves and serve hot.
